My evaluation: skip it. I tell people to pretend that Old Man's War ended at book 3. Read book 4 if they really want to revisit it and clear up a couple things but 1-3 is a complete series, is very awesome, and they should stop there.Books 5-6 don't really carry the story forward. And I can't help but think Scalzi stopped taking the series seriously. Seems like there are more joke-aliens and silly scenarios and he's just "having fun with it", which is fine if I'm reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series which is meant to be a parody to begin with but it makes for a disappointing continuation of the previously serious Old Man's War. I like Scalzi's casual, irreverent style, but I enjoyed the Old Man's War series because of the mix of intelligence, sci-if technology, and action....none of which this book has in abundance. I'm in publishing, and as an editor, I feel like I recognize the look of a book slapped together to make a publishing company happy--an un-loved, forgotten book created just to make a buck on an established author's fan base. I would be shocked if this were anything other than Scalzi's scraps regarding Lt. Harry Wilson, wedged into the Old Man's War timeline, and then published to get to the next book (which I desperately hope is better). All good writers have considerably more content than the ever show to the reader, and this content should've gone unremarked and unread in Scalzi's notebooks.If all you like about Scalzi is the witty repartee, by all means pick up B Team. If not, this book is itself a B- level effort (C level, really), likely more about the publishers politics/bottom line than about the writing or story.
